Mohair is the hair of the Angora goat. The mohair fiber is smooth, strong and resilient it does not attract or hold dirt particles. It is very lustrous and shiny comparable to silk. Mohair absorbs dye evenly and permanently and has a wonderful sheen.
The fineness and lock formation (curls) of mohair from every goat is different and differs as the goat ages. The fineness of mohair is measured in microns (1/1,000,000) of a meter. The finest mohair comes from the first and second shearing of kid goats (under one year) – micron count 23-30. The next finest comes from the third and fourth shearing when the goats are yearlings (one year old) – micron count 31-35. All other mohair is considered adult mohair – micron count 36-40. The micron count for human hair (adult), by contrast, is 60-70 microns.
A special thank you goes out to my youngest son, Vance. He agreed to be my mitt and sock model. Thank you, Vance, for your patience and all your good ideas
